Cordyceps, “Chinese mushroom caterpillar”, “Tibetan caterpillar mushroom”
The Cordyceps mushroom was discovered by Tibetan shepherds. They found that their animals became especially vital when they graze on the meadows where these mushrooms grew. And as they decided that if it was good for bovine animals, it would have to apply to the human organism too, and after a while the shepherds themselves started to consume these mushrooms.
Inhabitants of the high mountain regions of the Himalayas still harvest the mushrooms of the caterpillar, and for some this has become a major livelihood.
Origin and Use of Cordyceps
Cordyceps is found in the high Tibet mountains – between 3000 and 5000 m above sea level. The mushroom is also found on other high meadows and pastures of the Himalayas. In these places, the search of the interesting-shaped mushroom is often the only source of income for the local population.
The “caterpillar” mushroom is named on its unusual way of life: in the autumn it “attacks” a certain type of host caterpillar that serves her as a food in the winter. In spring, from the body of the caterpillar, the brown fruit bodies of Cordyceps are emerging, which the shepherds gather. Since the discovery of the mushroom is very difficult and the market demand far exceeds the quantity offered, today the Cordyceps mushroom has become a very valuable commodity: one kilogram of wild Cordyceps mushrooms on the free market is offered at up to €28,000.
In order for all customers to obtain Cordyceps at an affordable price and to benefit from its healthy properties, the German company, named “Hawlik” uses a selected sort to produce larger quantities of this mushroom. At the same time, researches have shown that products made from Cordyceps cultivated mushrooms contain the same ingredients as those found in the wild mushrooms.
Composition of Cordyceps
Along with many vitamins, Cordyceps contains mineral substances and trace elements, some special amino acids such as cordycepin, ergosterol and L-tryptophan. The positive qualities of the mushroom are the subject to continuous scientific research. Polysaccharides specific for this drug mushroom, also called beta-glucans, are constantly attracting researchers’ attention and are part of a number of therapeutic protocols for mycophagy practitioners in Germany.
